Driving Licences And Understanding Penalty Points

You may find that as well as getting a fine for committing a driving offence in the UK, that your driving licence could also be endorsed with penalty points. These penalty points can stay on your licence for either four years or eleven years. Whether it is four or eleven years will depend on the severity of the offence.

If you have more than 12 points on your licence over a three year period then your licence will be disqualified and you will no longer be able to drive. And how long you are actually banned from driving for will depend on whether or not you have been banned in the past. The ban you will receive will be six months if it is the first time, one year if it is the second time you have been banned within three years and you will be banned for two years if it is the third time. You can also be disqualified until you retake your driving test. If your ban was the result of drink driving then you could be forced to take some medical tests before you are allowed to drive again.

The number of penalty points you receive on your licence will all depend on the severity of the driving offence. Here are just some examples;

Up to 10 points for failing to stop after an accident

6 points for driving when you are disqualified

If you drive without due care and without paying attention you could face up to nine points on your licence

Up to 11 points on your licence if you cause death by driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

If you drive a vehicle with unsafe brakes you could get three points on your licence

Failure to follow road traffic signals could mean three points on your licence

Above is just a tiny fraction of the possible offences and penalty points and judges may decide to just disqualify for the driver for some of these offences. You will need to apply for a brand new licence if you want to get these points removed from your licence once they have run out.

It is irrelevant what type of driving license you currently have, if you are searching for a driving related job your future employer is within their rights to check what type of license you have . Licence checks is something that should be taken seriously. Make sure you always hold the appropriate driving license before applying for a particular driving job.
